Roca Nivaria – Gateway to the Pico Del Tiede

Any stay in Tenerife – whether North or South – would not be complete without a trip to the existential reason this lush, beautifully contrasting island of culture and colours remains very much a genuinely inspiring tourist destination for 3 million visitors each year, as well as being a point of interest for many geologists, naturalists and botanists. A staggering 3,718 metres high, 18990 hectares across with an incredible thirty three endemic plant species, the lava from this incredible volcano has shaped the grounds and covered the soil with a thin but fertile soil, rich in minerals and able to sustain masses of pine forest between the flanks of 1000-2100m. Trips are available from the Roca Nivaria to nearby travel shops, everywhere really, and usually consists of a bus ride followed by a large ski lift to the alien summit. An otherworldly golden-brown terrain at the top, reminiscent of a Star Wars film and reeking of sulfurous air pockets, it is possible to see a distinct and clear, thin, blue line of the horizon beyond. The view from the top is, simply put, incredible, and one visited, no photograph can do this ancient, all-seeing natural wonder of the world the justice a human eye may forever recall it.

 

 

Roca Nivaria Background

Roca Nivaria is a hotel situated in the municipality of Costa Adeje. The area is home to many tourist resorts and the largest Water Park in Europe.

Both Historically and archaeologically, the area is important in the Canary island’s history. The Guanches (native Canarian Race) were found to make many cave homes and until the Spanish Conquest in 1494, this part of Tenerife was the capital of the guanche kingdoms. Many engravings, utensils and even mummies were found in this area of the island, and are now kept in the Santa Cruz Museum of Nature and Man.

Geologically, this area is home to Hell’s Gorge or “Barranco del Infierno”, a ravine that leads to the highest waterfall on the island. ALthought popular the trail’s visitor number is limited to help preserve and maintain the natural erosion levels. This part of the island was heavily inhabited by Guanches, while the island opposite Adeje’s coastline, La Gomera, still plays homage to its ancient Guanchian or ‘Berber’ roots with a traditional ‘whistling’ type of language still in use today.
