The accommodation at Garonga Safari Camp reflects the surroundings of the bush – textured earthy colours and clean lines have been incorporated with fine linen to ensure pure comfort, a tempting place to lie and meditate for hours.
Tented Rooms – Shower under the stars
The Tented Rooms are situated on a dry riverbed – each with a wooden deck that commands spectacular views. The rooms are spacious, with large, draped beds. In addition to the indoor shower, there is an outdoor shower that flows outwards from the luxury of the room, providing a continuous link to nature.
Hambleden Suite – a once in a lifetime experience
The Hambleden Suite offers luxurious accommodation and privacy in exceptional surroundings. The Suite contains an ebony four-poster bed with an en-suite bathroom, which includes a hand-beaten copper bath and matching basins. The Suite also has an outdoor shower, as well as a private pool and deck.

You can either try your hand at every activity Garonga has to offer, or you can do simply nothing at all – lazing in the hammock with a good book while watching the grazing impala.
Activities include game drives, wilderness walks, sleep-outs, outdoor bush-baths and aromatherapy and reflexology sessions. Garonga encourages all guests to indulge in activities that will allow them to walk close to the animals, and thereby enhance their wildlife encounter.

Bush Sleep out
Guests may sleep out on their own on a beautiful deck with stunning views overlooking the Veldt. A Sumptuous Picnic Hamper, a Drinks Box, and Hot drinks are left for them at the Deck. They are left with a radio and will get collected in the morning. A Wash basin and Toilet close by are provided. It is a 20 minute drive from the main Garonga camping pods. A truly magical experience!
Wildlife at Garonga
Garonga offers a true safari in a pristine wilderness. The wide variety of game at Garonga ensures that guests are pleasantly surprised at what they see, as well as how close the animals are when they are sighted. Staff at Garonga as well as our many holidaymakers have contributed to the fabulous wildlife Garonga photo album.
There is plenty of interaction with the Guests when looking for game. Guests are encouraged to follow the tracking experience (almost as exciting as seeing the game) whether by vehicle or on foot.
We encourage our guests to interact with their environment as much as possible, taking a deeper understanding of wilderness away with them.
Garonga Safari Tips
What to bring on Safari
Binos, Camera (Spare film and Batteries), hat or cap, sunglasses.
What to wear on Safari
Neutral Colours only (certainly no Whites), good walking shoes.
General Etiquette on Safari: No smoking during the drive; talk normally; No standing up in a vehicle; Do not touch the Ranger’s Rifle. The rest is commonsense.Weather:Sept – March: Spring/Summer. Max Temps 50 degrees Cent., min.20 degrees.
Between Nov and March Garonga has the rains which are not prolonged and not too heavy (Annual Rainfall is 450 mm). As indicated you can get extreme hot weather for a few days before the rains come. This period is normally when the Mosquitoes come out, but Garonga is in a low risk area. We suggest you bring long sleeved shirt and trousers for the evenings; otherwise use Mosquito Spray.
April – August: Autumn/Winter. Max temps are around 30 degrees Centigrade, and Min. 5 degrees (at night/dawn in peak winter). It does feel very cold early morning in the middle of the Winter, and late in the evenings. Generally no rains during the winter season and no Mosquitoes (still advisable to take precautions).
Sept – March: A weather/rain proof jacket, fleece/jersey, swimming gear. We do have a same day Laundry service, so you don’t need loads.
April – August: Jacket, jerseys, gloves, balaclava, scarf, swimming gear if you don’t mind a “Fresh Swim”.
There is no dress code in the Camp – relax and wear what you please.
Garonga Safari Camp is situated in the secluded and private Makalali Conservancy in the Limpopo Province, and it is one hour from Phalaborwa and Hoedspruit airports, west of Kruger National Park. It can be reached by car, private air charter, or Commercial Airlines.
From Johannesburg take the N4 past Witbank, turn off the N4 to Belfast . From Belfast go through Dullstroom towards Lydenburg. Through Lydenburg and through Orighstad. After going through the JG Strijdom Tunnel measure 10 km then turn left on the R36 towards Tzaneen. Travel 10 km on the R36 then turn right at the Phalaborwa sign – travel for about 25 km. Turn left at the “T” junction. Go past Mica village, just the other side of Mica, turn left towards Gravelotte. Measure 15 km from the turn off, Then you will see a Garonga Safari Camp sign on the left hand side of the road. Turn left onto the dirt road Follow signs to the lodge. (5hr drive)
