Dubrovnik is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea, a seaport, and the center of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Dubrovnik ranks high as one of the top tourist destinations, in the Mediterranean Sea. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dubrovnik has humid subtropical cum Mediterranean climate and this is occasioned by the fact that the city has only one summer month, when there is less than 40 mm of rainfall. Anything outside this and Dubrovnik, would have been classified solely as either a humid subtropical, or Mediterranean climate.

The city of Dubrovnik has moderately dry summers and mild to wet winters. From October to April, the bora wind from Siberia blows cold gales down the Adriatic coast, and there are thundery conditions all year round (even in summer). It is very rare for it to snow in Dubrovnik.

There is an annual summer festival, organized in Dubrovnik called Dubrovnik Summer Festival. This extremely lively event spans 45 days and features concerts, live plays, and a variety of games. Dubrovnik Summer Festival, in 2007, was awarded a Gold International Trophy, for Quality presented by the Editorial Office and Trade Leaders Club.

The city of Dubrovnik also celebrates the feast of Sveti Vlaho (Saint Blaise), every 3rd of February with parades, Mass, and other activities.

In all of Europe, Dubrovnik has the third oldest pharmacy, which dates back to 1317. The pharmacy is located at the Brothers monastery, in Dubrovnik.

Where to go in Dubrovnik

The bay of Dubrovnik is the wooded island of Lokrum, it has a fortress, monastery, a botanical garden, and naturist beach. Dubrovnik has quite a number of tourist destinations, including a few beaches. Banje is Dubrovnik’s main public beach, and is home to the East west Beach Club.

Important landmarks worth visiting in Dubrovnik include the Sponza Palace. The Sponza Palace is a 16th century building, which is currently home to National Archives. The Rector’s Palace is another tourist attraction in Dubrovnik, it has a Gothic-Renaissance structure, and an ornate staircase; the palace now houses a museum.

At the eastern side of the Placa in Dubrovnik is the Little Onofrio’s Fountain, which supplies water to the market place in Luza Square.

The wall of Dubrovnik is another interesting site that has attracted visitors from far and near, and has served as a viable filming location for top television series, including Game of Thrones (King’s Landing). The wall runs about 2 kilometers around the city. The view from the top of the wall of Dubrovnik covers the old town and the Adriatic, it is simply amazing.

There are entrances to the walls around the Pile Gate, the Maritime Museum, and the Ploče Gate. The Pile Gate proves to be the busiest of all three.

Fort Lovrijenac is a monumental fort in Dubrovnik that rises just above 37 m. The monument is located next to the waterfront, around Konoba Gallus.

Dubrovnik is a great place to start exploring the southern Adriatic coast, including the Elaphite islands, Korcula, amongst others. Beaches in Dubrovnik include Lokrum Island, Lapad Beach, and Banje Beach.
